Cigarette Affairs

Casey Wei 2006 (Austin)

You walk through the door, still smoking the cigarette you had when you left.
Smoke on your face in a dissolute disarray.

"Honey?" Spoken sourly, leads you to me.
The same routine every night at 8, kill me slowly every time you're late.
Send me overkill, pearls in my eyes.
Blood between my thighs, still smoking the cigarette you had when you left.

Used until there's no tobacco.
Burnt dry, but your mind burns faster.
Sentimentality when the light flickers out but you relight it every each time.
Cost me your flame, the same routine every night at 8.

Mindlessness is a masterpiece in which we paint
with no care for the way we express our pain.
Paint a mural with the remaining last hits you have - the last moments of the hits of our cigarette affairs.

About this poem

This is a poem I wrote about domestic violence. It captures the essence of an abused spouse who compares themself to a cigarette.
