Hambone

Richard Groff 1957 (Pottstown, Pa.)

In this world are bait and hooks
That to the fish look pleasing
But when the fish go for the bait
The hooks prove so deceiving

At first, they seem like gentle prods
Until they get embedded
Then when you’re hooked they reel you in
The very thing you dreaded

Your hunger pains aren’t bad enough
To seek a quick solution
Not if it gets you hooked into
A life of prostitution

The world pedals temporary comfort
To ease a deep and unrelenting pain!
