the person I am today

I would have liked to choose my life from a wardrobe
with skins stretched out on hangers
in a store with unique pieces
I would have liked to stay for hours
in the changing room
to find my ideal product
in which to feel myself comfortable
a product tailored to mirror my personality
but somewhere an error crept in
I woke up in this poor skin
full of defects
patched here and there

At first it was hard for me to accept it
I was undressing it
I was throwing it into the street in disgust
a worthless cloth, I told myself
but it was returning to me like a faithful dog
it was screaming at my door until I felt sorry for it
and I was getting it back
it took us a while
to get used together
to know each other better
all feelings and all shortcomings

the closer we got
the more our loved ones moved away from us
for fear of being bitten

in a world obsessed with perfection
with changed seasons on the conveyor belt
no one would have had the courage to put themselves in my skin

I would have liked to choose my life
to my liking
to live it with maximum intensity
but I wonder
if they were everything all the way I wanted them to be
was I the person I am today?
