May I dare

May I Dare
Copyright: Bernard R. October

Dark clouds arise and thunders roar
As lightning flashes through window and door
Till daybreak lashes and lingers on
While under the clouds a shadow came
Setting our hearts with tongue aflame
Escape I cannot dare

Why, Mamma, are you taking a quiet leap
Into the safety of silence and sleep?
How can I hide from me?
Who am I supposed to be?
Do you even care?
Daddy you are even quiet more
As you hide behind courages door
Packing the pieces of your earthly life
Piercing through the roof and skies
Lord, how long still, is your quiet prayer
While round the corner I quietly stare...
My hope, my future; may I dare?

Through many a danger and dark night
You held my little hand
Through many a restless night
Your lullabies chased the demons away
But dearest mother of mine
Who will dare to shine a light
As I wander through the darkness
in the allies of my mind,
who will drive away the fears
etched in the crevices of memory for years?
Do I dare wonder, do I dare?

About this poem

This is deep personal, yet I have written a book also to rid myself of the shame. At age 5yrs old I walked in on my mother and another man. My conscious mind could not comprehend. At Age 9 this very man crashed into our home, jerked my very sick dad around and shouted out how long 'it's been going on'. Years later I started making calculations; they're all dead and gone now, and I still don't have the answer...
