Father’s Day Salute

Richard Groff 1957 (Pottstown, Pa.)

Happy Father’s Day dear Lord
Yes, beautiful it is
How could there be a better day?
To come and snatch your kids
With violence come and take them
From the earth where they’ve been living
Take them from this wicked world
Inspire more thanksgiving

When they are caught up in the air
With you in all your glory
Then just as it is written
Comes the climax of your story

The candy jar is empty now
And all the children mourn
For all of those still trapped on earth
Who bear the nation’s scorn

When Jesus comes and takes his bride
Then God will shut the door
The foolish virgins left outside
He’ll clear his threshing floor
The wheat is brought into his barn
The chaff is all burned up
And no one wants to rot in hell
But they will drink his cup
