To The Dirt

For 55 years it’s been you and me
We created a beautiful life
And three children that are loved beyond words
So blessed and happy

Now you sit and stare out the window
Family photos kept on your lap
Time is lost and doesn’t matter
Past and present mix together
The future slipping into the ether

If you forget me
I will tell you the story of us
And I will hold you close
In the darkest of night
Until the sun comes up

All the things you like to do
So simple, perhaps ordinary
They are the most beautiful
And I will do them for you

I will play your favorite songs
Finish reading that book you couldn’t put down
I will walk in the rain
Have a glass of pink rose’
Look for wheat pennies in the change jar
Make a wish on a shooting star

I braid your hair with ribbon you saved from our wedding day
I place in your hands a single dried flower from your bouquet
Living with you was so very easy
Letting go, Impossible

I made a vow to you then and honor it now
For our time together here on earth
I love you always
It’s you and me to the dirt
