The Diet

Adjekawen A. Jeremiah 1998 (Delta State, Nigeria)

Maybe I’m not meant to be happy
Maybe I’m not  meant to smile
Everything hurts
And every hurt hunts

Have you a sachet of sadness,
And five cubes of bitterness?
You’ve got no evil
I’ll check the next door

A spicy sauce of anger
How much for a plate?
A brown loaf of hatred
Revenge! Ahh, Revenge!
Three glasses,
Serve them hot!

Hot Gossip and a plate of envy,
The breakfast I’m served
And What do I get for lunch?
A Grimace and a chill bottle of spite
Blackmail, a delicious cuisine for dinner.
Specially cheffed by Betrayal

Being enslaved to kindness
Fatal, a weak spot
Naive, I followed my kindreds
Why exploit my weakness?

Maybe I’m not just meant to be loved
Maybe I’m not just meant to smile
Everything hurts
And every hurt hunts

About this poem

The poem portrays the plight of the poet persona, living among friends who turned out to be not real friends after all. The poem deploys a flashback technique to convey its essence. It starts in the present day ( stanza 1, 2 & 3), where the poet persona is shown to be sad and full of bitterness of heart. Then, it shifts to be past (stanza 3 & 4), unveiling to the reader the reason for the anger and vengeful spirit of the poet persona. And finally, it shifts to the present day again (stanza 6), where the poet persona was shown to have retired in the belief that he was not meant to be loved.
