Time Heals

Time heals all wounds
Yet the scars still remain
Buried deep,
Creating roots
Little tendrils of pain
Sorrow running through your body
A temple ransacked
Trashed and abandoned
There's no helping it,
No restoration project
Just a pat on the head and a good will wish
The reassurance and reminder that, of course...

Time heals all wounds
Whether they be spiritual or physical
But it doesn't bring oxygen to these old lungs
Blackened and burned from a fire that scorched
Burning flesh rotting away.
Ruined beyond recognition.
And right when you think all the tears have doused the flames
A forgotten picture pops back up
Haunting you
Telling you

Time heals all wounds
Or that's what you trick yourself into thinking
If you just focus on the future
The past doesn't matter.
It can't hurt you anymore
He can't hurt you anymore
But then you close your eyes and all you see
Are baby blues looking back at you
And then you remember
At one point
He was all the future you ever needed
So you hold your breath
Will it into darkness
Sending the message along with it

Time heals all wounds
But the blood has been spilt
All the seconds in the world
Cannot bring this empty mutilation
Back into fruition
Lacerated.
Punctured.
Traumatized.
Nothing can bring air back into this empty chest
There is no help on its way

The stopwatch is broken
Now is the time to admit.
To confess, if you will
That it's all bullshit
That it's not going to get better.
But you can't just stay on the floor
So you pick yourself up
Slowly.
Agonizingly slow.
Each step hurts less.
Not because it is less painful
Not because it gets easier.
Your brain tricks itself
It's survive or die, and you can't seem to die
No.
This is desperation.
The last feeble attempts
Of surviving the heartbreak of a traitor.
Whose only parting words to you were:

Time heals all wounds.

About this poem

I wrote this poem at the end of a toxic relationship. I held on too long too something that he easily threw away. Time doesn't heal, but this helped close the wound a little bit more.
