Splinter

A splinter in my heart
Jagged and piercing
Buried deep
How have I gained this shard?

The more I gaze at it
I realize
It’s not a splinter but a bough
Extending from a seed

Someone has planted this within me
My heart a vessel
My body an arboretum
The tweezers remain in the drawer

One branch becomes two
Leaves sprout
Emerging from each gap they find
But they fill not hollow me out

Expanding evermore
Surprised by my capacity
I tend to it now
Beautiful foliage, all in my beating heart
