Life

Amber Baker 1985 (Butte, MT)

It twists and turns and makes you spin
The beauty of it never ends

You laugh, you cry, you fall to your knees
The irony will never cease

Your heart will fall and shatter at times
The love you felt will leave you blind

The more you expect, the less you receive
Your reality becomes the lies you believe

Succumb to things that numb the pain
The comfort soon becomes the bane

Through this darkness you’ll find your light
The bad times, you’ll see, were blessings in hindsight

With your eyes ahead, your chin held firm
New wisdom abounds, you live and you learn

About this poem

I wrote this poem a little over 10 years ago when I was struggling with eating disorders and being suicidal. I think the first line that came to me was “the comfort soon becomes the bane”. I have always been extremely proud of this poem. I think I finished it in 2011.

Born in Butte, MT. Grew up in Boulder, MT. I’ve always been drawn to writing and poetry and remember writing my first poem with my dad when I was about 4 or 5. It was about mashed potatoes. I’ve been writing off and on over the years and would love to publish a book or two and some poetry in the future. more…
