Heart

Sarah Leggett 1979 (Fort Smith, AR)

Little heart broken so,
How is it that you weep?
Isn’t Love professed just enough,
To fulfill all you seek?
Weary pieced together heart,
Held in place with fraying strings,
How true you are to jaded words,
Those sweet facetious things.
Heart of scars cradled gently,
Bleeding aflame in your palm.
A knight comes soon with sword,
Burning and bright so be calm.
Sweet and beautiful tender heart,
Don’t you know my precious one,
Come that night a moon filled night,
My oath to ONLY you my girl,
My vow to never again to part.

About this poem

Written during one of my most painful depressions. It lasted months and it nearly destroyed me for good. Recovery time was so very lengthy and I felt as though nobody cared and even blamed me for making myself feel the way I did. Writing is one of the only things that helps during these fathomless periods of internal isolation and despair.
