Upon a calm, still night, I gave you birth,
While Christmas joy and gladness filled the earth,
I did not dream that on some distant day
Our grown-up son would be so far away.

My love is with you over there, as here;
And may the Christ in tender love draw near.
Oh, may there dwell within your heart sweet peace;
And someday soon, may every war drum cease.
