Little Girl

That little girl
Who read books of true love
Of fairytales and happily ever afters
That little girl who dreamt of magic
Of a Prince Charming
Her knight in shining armor
That little girl
With a heart wide open
Who longed to be swept up
In a whorlwind of romance
Always dreaming always hoping
That little girl
Is all grown up now
She sees love for it is
Disappointment and hurt
Betrayal and doubt
That looking glass of fantasy
Shattered
That dream of magic
Broken
Her heart locked up in the fortress of her mind
With walls of fear and of caution
She thinks now only of
Responsibility and of obligation
Only somewhere deep inside
The little girl still resides
And despite everything that’s forced her to grow up
She secretly still longs only for love

About this poem

this is a poem about the dreams we are too and too practical to admit we hope will one day come true. It is about the things the child within us wishes for that pragmatism does not allow us to admit
