A Cat in the Morning

I used to make fun of everyone peering in
Looking at you through the glass
I took for granted that I was inside with you
I thought I’d be there forever
All the others who wanted in I wished I’d never be
Only able to see you occasionally
Only when you chose to let them
And only for a brief moment
My time inside with you while I thought was permanent
It ended
Now I’m the one peering through the glass
Hoping to be let in
A cat in the morning
Scratching on the door
I miss your warmth
I miss what we had
I want more
But you no longer want me
So here I stay
On the outside
Peering in
Hoping one day
You’ll let me in again
