the wanderer and the skull (Canto 2)

t’was many moons ago,
many ages in this world
have since passed.
Wisdom has been given,
but wisdom doesn't make the wise.
Commands have been given,
formations are set,
the vanguard is coming,
defend to the death.
“Fight for your lives!” said i
“Fight to forget”.
We fought, the battle raged on,
the trenches were muddy
and blood flowed through them.
the sky ablaze with white starlight, we fought,
we fought,
till the sunne sank to orange,
till seagulls abound
the beaches were,
eating flesh of the dead,
oh how nature works!
like red rocks on shores
the bodies were
too many to tell friend from foe
was i alive while others are dead?
Why did we fight i couldn't tell.
Who won? If both are dead?
The sea is louder now, darkness fell.
Then as if the circle completes,
i find myself beheaded on a beach.
What was this for?
What did I achieve?
Was I happy?
Where is the field?
