Fifty-Five

Gerald Ray 1943 (Providence, Ky.)

March 22

I never thought at twenty,
I'd live to be fifty-five
But time swiftly swept away the days
No wiser, than I was back then, yet I am alive
My hair is gray, my legs are weak,
And a horse is hard to mount
But banks, McDonald's and others
Offer me a small discount
I am a more caring person
My heart is filled with love
I get where I'm going, but late when I arrive
Still I find it awesome
I'm here at fifty-five
The dogs and I everyday, go
For a three hour stroll
That helps me accept completely
Things I can't control

I am twenty years old and can't imagine being fifty-five years old. I've always hoped I could be that happy when I'm 55. I love how the poem talked about how getting older doesn't necessarily mean you can never be happy. Being happy is a choice.
