A Treasure in the Sanctuary

Adjekawen A. Jeremiah 1998 (Delta State, Nigeria)

A merchant from the south
Lodging in a church at moonlight,
Praying in the Sanctuary.
Beauty march dreams.

A rosary on a heart of rose.
So wonderful a smile
Beauty gazing for what seems like in eternity;
Frozen in the moment of time.
Too nervous for speaking.
Too faithful for flirting.

Lips on earth for kisses,
I guess that pair’s for prayers.
What could be lovelier than a kiss?
Let me hear the saints speak.

To purchase this treasure I've found,
I must sell my merchandise.
To obtain this pearl of value,
I must stake a fortune.

About this poem

The poem centers on love at first sight. It tells the reader the story of a traveler who stops by in a church (in a rural and riverine setting) to spend the night in order to have some rest from his voyage. But while he is yet on his knees, before an imposing statue of St. Mary, saying a bedtime prayer, his attention is stolen by a presence: a beautiful church girl, with a rosary on her chest, who probably must have come to entreat the magnificent statue for a blissful night rest too. Repeatedly, both steals glances of each other, which finally culminates in an emission of a heart-melting smile from the girl; and the rest becomes a story.
