When I Finally Told You (TW for self-injury)

When I finally told you,
Your eyes teared up
And I thought I heard your heart crack.
When I finally told you,
I rolled up my sleeves
And showed you my cuts.
I could already see you
In your mind asking
Why I would do this.
When I finally told you,
I remember your expression.
Your face fell
And you stared in horror;
I couldn’t bear to meet your eyes,
Afraid of what I would find there.
When I finally told you,
You gathered me tight in your arms
And whispered with a crack in your voice
How much you loved me
And how much you cared,
And how you didn’t want
Me to keep harming myself.
When I finally told you,
You hugged me so tight
I thought I would break.
You told me how strong I was
And told me to
Never give up on my fight,
And told me to
Keep fighting to remain in the light.
When I finally told you,
I felt the sun reach down
And send me a sunbeam of love
Through the clouds.
