caffeine

i don’t know
if it’s the coffee from 10am
or myself
that’s stopping me from
the sweet, blissful
dead-to-the-world
dreamless sleep.

i made cold brew yesterday.
it has to sit for 24 hours
while my mind is
constantly tossing and turning
just like my body
the charging cord
for my low battery
is brewing.

i had a big day.
i cracked the ice that contained
my thoughts.
so long they had been swimming
past one another
oblivious to the world above.

sunlight is beginning to reach
the darkest points of my sea
i can’t sleep unless it’s pitch black.

coffee is bittersweet
how long can i sustain
artificial energizer
instead of what my body craves
sweet, blissful
dead-to-the-world
sleep.

i guess we’ll find out.

About this poem

i wrote this poem the night after i went to therapy for the first time. after so long living alone with my thoughts, i couldn't sleep. i struggled to rest because my mind was so unruly and the gates had opened. i also coincidentally made coffee that same morning, and it felt like a fitting comparison. to all those who finally are seeking help, it can be bittersweet (just like coffee) but i know it will get easier to heal.
