When Once We Loved

When once we loved,
our goal was to travel
see places we could only see in our dreams,
like the Alps, a sunset in Burma,
or Hawaii’s crystal blue streams.
We were star-eyed romantics
Romeo and Juliet, Hepburn-Tracy,
Bogie and Bacall,
immersed in each other, breathing each other,
living our dreams and their call.

When once we loved, stars blinked
with innocence in the night sky.
We embraced the energy of our youth
lived in the light of each other’s eyes.
Our future was not yet written.
Our dreams remained our own.
We planted flowers that still blossom.
I marvel at how our love has grown.

About this poem

Written as I approached the 30th anniversary of my marriage. It is just a celebration of the love we shared.
