Growth

People will say to live in the moment
Today could be the best day or your life
And while that could be true
Today is just a Wednesday

Today is just a Wednesday, in which you do the same as you have always done
You don’t see the growth
The happiness
The laughter
Or the sadness right away
What you see is a Wednesday

A Wednesday in which you go to school, go to work and do homework
You see your friends and live life as you always have

Next year, on the same Wednesday, it will still feel like a Wednesday
Yet, the past Wednesday will look different
You look different
You feel different
You are different
Some people may think of that as a bad thing, but it is good

Seeing growth day by day is a struggle
It is not something that can be measured
You can question if you are growing every single day, and still not know
Unless you look at the past Wednesday
The past Wednesday gives you a gimped from your past and into your future

The Wednesday after November 30th was a terrible day
Yet, now Wednesdays just feel like Wednesdays
We have grown
You have grown
And the future will see to that

That Wednesday did not feel like a Wednesday
It was as if time had stopped that past day
For 4 individuals, time did stop

But life has a way to keep you moving
To ground you to reality, even while reality is not good
And Wednesdays turn into Wednesdays again
You don’t know when it happened
But it did

Wednesday feeling like a Wednesday, also feels like memories forgotten
Feels as if we aren’t doing justice to the four fallen
But still, it’s just a Wednesday

The reality is, Wednesdays feeling like Wednesdays means growth
Means time has not stopped for you
The future is something that you have,
And while some are left behind.
They want you to keep going

So, to say that today is just a Wednesday
Means you are growing everyday
Silently
You can’t see it
But if today is just a Wednesday
That means you have grown
Growth is good
And to say today is just a Wednesday, means you have more Wednesdays to come

About this poem

I graduated in 2020 from Oxford high school. The only way you will recognize that name, is if you remember the school shooting that took place November 30th 2021. While I wasn’t there, the aftermath is something I am still dealing with. I lost a friend and I had many others that I care about in the building that day. This poem is about growing from that trauma.
