MY PLACE

I know a land which is far away
From the bustling life of Perth-
Where the skies are blue for most of the day
'Gainst the rich red-ochred earth.

I know a beach where the water's warm
And extends for miles each way-
Where the stately camels tread and form
Long lines at the end of the day.

I know an ancient rocky pool
With a dinosaur's footprint near
In the red Devonian limestone cool
When the tides change hourly here.

I know a place which is humid, wet
Where black clouds burst in the sky-
While a thirsty earth drinks all it can get
When the green Wet season is nigh.

I know a town where the lifestyle slow
Moves to its own Broome pace-
With an aqua sea all around on show-
A beautiful,  tranquil place.

Where the mangrove thickets, darkly green
Hug the little shores round the Bay-
And a staircase to the Moon is seen
When the high tide ebbs away.

I know a Bay where the luggers plied
The waters deep, far and near
For the oyster shells with the pearls inside
With their lustrous beauty sheer.

I know a place where the culture's mixed
And blends in such unique ways-
With historic legends forever fixed
Round those bustling pearling days.

I know a place where the tourists flock
To the beaches, bays and the sun-
Where the ochred cliffs of deep red rock
Were formed when the earth was begun.

I know a place where the breezes blow
And the sun sets o'er the sea
In a blazing coppery orange glow
Etched deep in the memory.

It's the Port of Pearls in the Kimberley
Still isolated and remote-
With the pace of life so slow and free
An aura rare seems to float...

Where the poincianas' blooms so red
And the coconut palms' soft sway
Makes the tropical atmosphere unshed
It's mystical charm all the day.
