New Horizon

Kyle Kennedy 1988 (Athlone)

Anger rages deep inside
Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide
Gnawing away at the soul perpetually
Lockdown forever, or at least indefinitely

Like a horse blinkered on the track
My gaze on the horizon, no looking back
Countless steps have been exchanged
Yet the horizon sits smugly, unwavering, unchanged

I yearn for the days of old
When drink was taken and stories told
Floating around in an idyllic haze
Hopes and dreams now set ablaze

From the ashes a phoenix rises
Division leads us to our demises
Come now brother, lift your head
Two roads diverged, which one to tread?

Rouse the beast now from its slumber
Murmurs mutate into loud thunder
One hundred years it’s been at rest
How long until they stand abreast?

About this poem

This poem depicts a bleak totalitarian nightmare in Ireland. Some hope for a brighter future is given but that remains to be seen.
