Eve(ing) Walks

Eve(ing) Walks

I can’t say when it happened, and  I am not sure what it is.
Still, inside me a wanton groove has begun, and I am wearing only pretense for protection.
On a languid night yet somehow exploding with life, under the guise of an innocuous stroll, I stride, I strut with purpose.
With each step, I etch a memory.

You scramble onto your fence.
All your natural gifts allow you to take delight, as others have.
I refuse to see you as I pass by, and as I pass by your eyes linger, widen with deference; then they pass bold messages to your lips.
I watch them curve in reverence, even when I don’t respond.
Loose blossoms settle against bosoms that glow and glisten with possibilities.
My hips flow against the humming base of the night and you revel in me.
The uncertainty of it all makes me giddy; a pleasure vertigo.
You sit on your fence and make promises to me and the heavens, but my pretense is my protection so I let you promise me more.

Can you hear it? My human music buzzing, my life’s flow quickening and warmed by your stare?
I am ashamed to own it, but I relish the sensation.
You wait for me, hoping to satisfy all your appetites, great and small.
My pretense is my protection, but you don’t know it.
Sometimes I am frightened of you, but you don’t know it.
My smiles lie to you, but we don’t know it.

About this poem

I wrote this poem about 10 years ago. It is in remembrance of what it was like as a teenage girl coming into womanhood, and what it felt like starting to receive male attention.
