Dear Mommy (A letter from her unborn child)

Dear Mommy,

You don't know me, yet
Because I'm brand new
I'm that new life
Growing inside of you.

Every breath you take
I take with you
So, when you take that drink
I do that, too.

Please keep me safe
And free from harm
So I can be held
In your arms

I wish that you
Could hear my cry
You're gonna kill us both
I don't want to die!

God's plan for me
Is to laugh and play
Right now my future
Looks dark and gray

Born with your addiction
Would not be fair
Or a tragic loss
You'd have to bear

Give us both
The chance to meet
And count the toes
Upon my feet

To know pure love
In a mommy's glance
In my eyes, too
Give me that chance

Please, Mommy
I have no choice
Those offers of help
"They" are my voice.....

               Love,
                      "To Be Named Later"

About this poem

It's hard for some of us alcoholics and addicts to truly admit to the damage we cause to the lives around us that we often refuse to accept how selfish this disease is. And, as a direct result of our addiction, we forget about the unborn child. A precious life that doesn't get a choice nor does he/she get a voice. So, when someone reaches out with an offer of help, that might be the that precious child's only chance to be heard.

I live in Florida and I am a local dessert vendor called The Ice Queen. I started writing poetry in elementary school and never thought much about it. I think it has a lot to do with being a hopeless romantic and I'm hypersensitive to other people's emotions, circumstances, relationships and everything in between. I found out later while in treatment for drug and alcohol addiction that poetry was a huge part of my recovery. I used poetry to help express myself and put my thoughts to paper. I can't write on a whim like some. I found that my poetry is inspired by my surroundings and how they have impacted me at that moment. Poetry is such a blessing and a beautiful form of expression that I get to share with others. more…
