The Lady at the Window
She sits at the window all alone
under the bright, glowing day-light.
Waiting for the kids to return from school,
and fill her house with joyful smiles.
They are not her own kids
But the kids of her neighbors
Whose moms have gone to work,
and there is no one to take care of them
after the school finishes on time each day.
Her own children are now big enough,
To take care of themselves
And has settled down
At some foreign place.
They are now working in some
Reputed firm
In some distant foreign land
Whose name she still struggles to spell.
She was married away at a very young age,
So she never got the opportunity to excel.
Her husband did not want her to work outside
Rather he chose a life for her to scrub the dishes all time.
She silently washed away all her dreams of life
And kept listening that She has no identity and earning of her own each time.
The kids come smiling and giggling,
All the way from the little alley
Where the school cab driver has dropped them
And they come dancing on tunes of melody.
When the kids come back from school,
She lovingly welcomes them in her home
She has already kept their meal ready,
She has always been a good cook
And loves to feed others
Especially children whether its her own
Or who step by at her home.
She loves teaching and had aimed to teach
At a school someday
But could never fulfill that dream of hers
As the walls of her husband’s home
Blocked her way carving to the school.
So, she now teaches these children
Who spend time with her.
Till their parents return home.
She could neither teach children at her home
And earn for a living
Because the parents always thought
She has no proper degree and experience for it.
So, she fulfills her dream to teach
By teaching these kids
Whose parents have gone to work
And shall come back home when the Sun
Sleeps, waking up the Moon.
She then plays with these kids
Hide and Seek and musical chair.
She also hears from them
What they have done at school.
The sunset is nearing now,
And she starts preparing for dinner,
Her husband eats at sharp 9
She cannot afford to delay his meal
As he needs to wake up early
And leave for office and earn their living.
The children’s parents now are heard
Knocking at the door,
She opens the door with a big smile
The parents thank her for keeping their kids
Safe and warm
She says that she loves the kids just like their own.
The kids softy wrap their arms around her
And kiss her gently on the cheek
And wave a goodbye and tell her
That they shall meet her again tomorrow
Without fail after school
Though her own kids has again
Forgotten to call her
And she does not want to disturb them
While they are at a foreign land
Living their dreams
Away from her and their home.
