Errol Flynn in Jamaica

Swordsman Errol Flynn.
I met him as a student.
During a recess.

About this poem

The world remembers and adores him as the swashbuckling screen legend Errol Flynn, the actor. I remember him another way, as the kindly Australian gentleman I met, along with his wife, Patrice Wymore, as a schoolboy at Titchfield, the seaside school I attended in Port Antonio, Jamaica, in 1945; when I was ten years old, and then discovered that he and I shared something in common that, to me, was quite special; that he and I as Gemini fellows, were both born on the twentieth of June, the both of us mercurial in our nature, the gift of gab a birthright of our own; he with the sword of blade, and I with the blade of tongue. My father, a police constable in Jamaica at that time, once owned a horse named Windsor, reputed to have been bought by Flynn and later used in a movie. These are cherished childhood memories savored as a s country schoolboy, chatting off camera with a Hollywood icon.
