Vulnerable Heart

Taunya Thomas 1974 (Maryland)

Vulnerable Heart

You showed up one day out of the blue
Making me feel what I feel for you

We became so close in what seemed like hours
I was under your spell you wield amazing powers

Powers that swept me off my feet
I felt your touch in every heart beat

I said to myself right from the start
“Put a shell around your heart!”

I knew right away that you’d try to break in
Like through an open window comes a strong wind

I had a wall up I was sure no one could break
Remembering how much I had at stake

Your kiss would bring sunshine to my gray
Weakening my wall in a very strong way

Now you’re a permanent part of my life
Saying you’ll stand with me through any strife

My Momma had visions and most have come true
She said “You’ll have a forever”-I wonder if that is you

I never expected to feel this way
My hopes of these feelings I’d long thrown away

I lived each day simply existing
My feelings for you there is no resisting

The butterflies in my stomach, the pound of my heart
Wanting to hold you and never be apart

I’m in my head I’m wondering what to do
“Let him go!” my mind says but I can’t seem to

I don’t know what our future will hold
But the thought of losing you makes my heart grow cold

It feels wrong to ask you to wait for me
Holding on for something that may never be

So many obstacles stand in our way
They are all so obvious I don’t need to say

On our shoulders the weight is a ton
A big thing to take on for anyone

I want no one to hurt and in that I don’t lie
I can’t say how this happened, now or why

To know our paths we wait and see, just holding on
I’m afraid of waiting for you it all might be gone

The touch of your hands, the feel of your lips
The melding of souls through tiny little sips

The vulnerable heart in each of us
Can’t always tell if it’s love or just lust

The vulnerable heart is a gift and a curse
For it to get broken there is a pain no worse

You’ve demolished the shell to my vulnerable heart
I plead to whoever’s listening, “Don’t let it get torn apart!”

Hold it tight in your hands and protect it true
I know you so well this is exactly what you’ll do

Since our vulnerable hearts are now entwined
I must protect yours as you’ll protect mine

Should one get hurt we’ll both feel the pain
And I know deep down we’d never be the same
