DEATH STALKING

Phil Roberts 1957 (Melbourne)

Death comes slowly stalking
From out of the red desert sand,
Sneaking through a haunted forest
Slinking across foul wastelands.

In a town named purgatory
Death has truly come to stay,
Creeping around streets and alleys
As it begins its monstrous play.

While innocents hide inside
Death hunts down lone street folk,
And as screaming breaks the silence
Suddenly the guileless have awoke.

Lying in their own warm beds
They hear the sound of awful death,
Hoping soon to fall back asleep
Too scared to breathe a single breath.

Outside in the doom-haunted streets
Death seeks out the broken and old,
Approaching slowly through the dark
Until touching them with its icy cold.

Death comes slowly stalking
Through a long-forgotten town,
Where no-one merely moves in
Instead, they are moving down.

In a town named purgatory
All truth and justice has flown,
And now only evil lives there
And hope and dreams are unknown.
