Melancholy of life and death

Ted Michealson 2000 (London)

The sun rises and falls,
As it does time and time again.
How many times have I seen this happen,
I question again and again.

I’ve seen men, women and children die,
And can choose to laugh or cry.
Though either way,
No emotions will accompany my expressions.

I’ve grown numb inside,
To the outside world,
And have begun to forget the feelings I once had,
The feelings of sadness, excitement and anger.

I pose this question to myself and others,
If you don’t feel an emotion for long enough,
Is it still even there?
That’s what I need to know.

I want to believe they are still there,
Yet no matter how hard I try,
How much I laugh and cry,
I still feel nothing.
