II Samuel 24.14

i heard it whispered in the wind
i heard it whimpered by the child
i heard it whispered as he killed
amongst the corpses as they piled

i heard it whispered amongst the trees
that shivered naked in the breeze
i heard it muttered amongst the bees
amongst birds jaded from o'erseas

they'd seen him with his scythe in hand
threshing to and fro
as he travelled 'cross the land
with swing and swipe and blow

how the mighty fell before him
the meek and weak 'uns too
their life 'n essence torn from limb
as they struggled to pull through

they whispered the secret in my ear
their hallowed message clear
better the rampage of G-d's messenger
than predator of war-nuclear

About this poem

This poem is about the Covid Pandemic, attempting to find some sort of silver lining. It is loosely based on II Samuel 24 (14), where King David chooses to be punished directly by the Hand of G-d rather than be afflicted by man, and later (24:17) sees the angel of G-d.
