Becoming Aware
Lawrence S. Pertillar 1947 (Connecticut)
Becoming aware beyond the limits,
Of one's own comfort zone.
To resist and refuse,
Curiosity to adventure and explore...
More of that which is,
Away from one's door.
With a welcoming this acknowledgement.
Can do wonders for a mind confined,
Within a kept perception...
That whatever only occurs,
In places heard or viewed on TV observed.
Only happens accidently,
When a channel is switched...
From that which is preferred to witness.
Done to do to disbelieve,
A remote to use is low on batteries.
And this reality to discover,
After purchasing a new TV.
To be told the old one,
Had not been needed to be thrown away!
'Do you mind if I ask you a question?'
'No.
Go right ahead.'
'When was the last time,
You decided...
To take a walk,
Around your own neighborhood?'
'What a ridiculous question.
I exercise everyday.
And after I take my garbage to the curb,
I call those I use to know...
Where I lived before,
About what's going in the World.'
'And...
Just how long have you lived here?
If that question isn't too personal.'
'Your getting close. But...
I'll have you know,
More than 50 years.
After my folks relocated.
And I was still in elementary school then.
What are you trying to imply?
I know more about TVs then you think I do.'
'And...
I bet you are a gun collector too.
To protect yourself from enemies!
Especially the ones you see on TV.'
'What has that got to do,
With a useless remote.
You claim only needed batteries.'
'Just curious.'
'You know what they say about curiosity?'
'No.
Not a clue.
What do 'they' say about it?'
'Snooping around,
Could get your butt struck with pellets!
When in doubt,
Stroll your nosey butt near my house.
Again!'
'Again?
I have no idea where you live.'
'Oh yeah?
You think I'm stupid?
And what is this remote for?
I already have one.'
'That was for the other TV.
This is for the new one.'
'You really pressing your luck.
Since you spent time,
Being rehabilitated.
You 'people' think you know everything.'
'What do you mean by that remark?'
'I've seen how you thug'ens on TV.
Doing gangsta stuff!
Then to find God in prison!'
'Wwwhhaaat!?'
'Nevermind.
And don't follow me outside either.'
'Trust me.
That want to wish is yours alone!
