I fell asleep

I fell asleep, and I dreamt of you and of our perfect life
Of how I met and married you, to be my perfect wife

And how our children grew and thrived oh, how the years had flown
How proud we were when our children had  children of their own

And how we sit and wait for end of life, in comfort still
Awaiting only, closing days before that final thrill

Then I awoke, and you had gone, save for a name and face
And a feeling of a great loss, which I could barely place

Then I met you in the street and whispered my love’s name
You asked me how I knew you, and from whence I came

I answered that you did not, nor could you understand
When glancing down I saw the ring, third finger, left hand.
