My Childhood

Srutimala Duara 1964 (Guwahati, Assam)

My Childhood

My childhood was on those streets
where silence reigned
Those homes along the street with wooden gates
always open

My childhood was in my neighbour's home
any time of the day
Sitting in my friend's courtyard where time stopped
to say hello

My childhood was in Grandmother's pickle
sunning on the long verandah
Listening to tales of princes and Krishna
 from the Mahabharata

My childhood was in our garden
smelling of hasnahana
Watching colours on butterflies
Playing hide and seek with fireflies

About this poem
