Dad

I wish I could hold and love your hands
And kiss them with my tear-filled eyes.
For me you’ve always been everything
Parent, teacher, breadearner and guide:
You gave me and my siblings the best
Of care and generous love and support.
Your gracious regard helps us be greater
Than we’d ever have been in our lives:
Richer, happier, assured and dynamic
In a future in which you’d ever be great.
With mom, you held us close to your hearts
Till the time came and adversity arrived
And I had to go abroad. He refused to let me go.
I showed him my tattered shoes and shirt
And told him how proud we had been
As long as he was earning and supported
Us in schools and colleges and paid all fees.
Now the times had changed and we needed
Big money to build careers worthwhile.
Both of us wept and he said, “Yes, you may go.”
But mother, so proud and sure of her children
She was in hospital but I was sure she’d be fine
And accept my decision, she was a realist.
Unto parents worldwide, my respectful salute.
They endure pain and suffering yet sacrifice
The joy of parenthood to see us through
Like the One Above who feels our pain
And helps us to rise and conquer misfortune
And attain the success and glory we sought.

M A Q RIZVON

The son of a well-known Urdu poet, I have been fascinated by the idea of atleast one or two collections of Urdu poems to be published. An India born American, I retain a love for poetry inherited from my dad. Urdu is one of the world languages that have a direct rise from the heart. It is more music than prose, and this love translates easily to other languages. The combination of English and Urdu gives us a unique harmony and cultural finesse. It has been easy for me to be an English poet of some rank. At age 91, I feel I have the best grooming to be able to avail a synthesis of not only the two best world languages but also a fusion of two different civilizations. It is a happy life that has been granted to me as I avail the climatic contrast and have, as the saying goes, the best of both worlds. I believe Urdu is the best fount for advancement in English. My first published book of poems is a slim volume titled - 'From My Heart to Yours' that has gained a good footing in the western world also. My wife of 71 years has been of great support to me and I am both glad and proud that we have never had any difference of opinion on any issue and my poems reflect the harmony that exists between us. more…
