Abandoned Walls
All the secrets are hidden in the walls,
behind the peeling wallpaper with the little yellow flowers.
Books remain upon the shelves with dusty covers,
and the cobweb covered clocks tell no hours.
You can almost hear the footsteps Echo down the hall.
And whispering voices from the faded family photos on the wall.
A teddy bear sits proudly in a child's rocking chair,
and holds on to the memories of the
child that once sat there.
What happened to make the family flee?
The truth is hidden in the walls,
if you listen carefully, you'll hear them whisper,
"I saw it all!'
Dishes left sitting on the table.
Books with crumbling covers, torn and dusty.
Family photos on the wall, now faded.
And a pungent smell, so damp and musty.
The beds all made, with everything left in order.
With precious memories left to decay.
Silence fills the rooms instead of voices.
If walls could talk, they'd have lot's to say.
A piano sits with silent keys,
while whispers echo throughout the room.
Shadows lurk in the darkened corners.
And time is sealed inside this silent tomb.
No one will ever know the reason
why these memories were left behind.
Only the walls know what happened,
and the clocks that can no longer keep time.
But the walls will never tell a soul.
They 'll keep the secrets tucked away.
And the memories will all soon fade.
As they turn to dust, from dark decay.
About this poem
I wrote this poem after seeing photographs of homes that were abandoned by their residents, leaving all of their belongings and memories behind.
