The lasting memory of you

It was a little before noon
when I saw the sun fade.
I opened up my eyes
And I noticed the moon had changed.
It’s funny how things creep up on you,
Even when it’s expected.
You count down the days,
But I was still surprised when it happened.
That’s the good thing,
I’ve come to this conclusion.
You were so alive while you were here,
Never once to me is your memory elusive.
Your voice is crystal clear,
Still ringing through my head.
Never once will I acknowledge
 that soul as dead.
You were still you,
Whole and bright.
Even in the last days,
You still saw the light.
It shocked me,
Scared me,
for I realized how quick this life and death thing is.
But you were alive, alive, alive.
And to me your heart still is.

About this poem

I wrote the first part of this poem the day a dear friend of mine passed away. From then on out every time I thought of her I wrote more, now I have this piece of her to look back on and remember.
