My Love Walked In The Garden

Alan S Jeeves 1951 (Lancashire)

My love walked in the garden air
Around the turn of light.
The early morning lingered there
A while, as well it might.
She stole her way across the lawn,
Her dew-steps in her wake;
Silently she faced the dawn
And watched it start to break.

The willow tree had bowed its head
Its limbs began to weep.
My love had risen from her bed
As those about her sleep.
She clutched her laden carpet bag
So firmly at her side
The pansies' faces stooped to sag
And snowdrop teardrops cried.

When, as she reached the garden gate
Beyond the primrose patch;
Where dismal daisies stand and wait,
She lifted up the latch.
Then out at large along the lane
She brushed a teary eye...
And glancing back, there in the rain,
She softly said goodbye.
