Sometimes I am sad when I think of you

Sometimes I am sad when I think of you,
Not because you’ve done wrong,
But because of me.

Sometimes I am sad when I think of you,
Because I didn’t say or do what I wanted or, what I did say or did do, hurt you
And I think it seems like all is well
But there a gap is present still
Between the two. You and me.

Sometimes I am sad when I think of you,
Because I don’t know what to say or ask so you know that I love you.
Sometimes I am sad when I think of you, because you’re there and I’m here,
I would phone but...but...would you answer?
Sometimes I am sad when I think of you, because of me and not you.
Things I’ve said, done, or thought, things I didn’t want to do, say or things I thought that I wanted to do or say but wouldn’t be right.
So sometimes I seem far away, like I don’t want to hang out with you,
But I do.
It’s just I feel guilty, confused or, maybe,
I think you’d rather be elsewhere.
Then I think of wasted times,
when I could have made you a better friend, by being a better friend.
Invite you along, ask why you came out to where I was or ask what is on your mind or dig a little deeper when the subtle signs say something is wrong.

Sometimes I don’t say what I think of you
But you should know.
Whether you’re loyal, kind, thoughtful, generous, patient, forgiving, understanding, caring, fun, care-free,
a joy, a gem, or a diamond no one knows about or maybe it’s just many words to say,
you are one good friend.

Yet, because of me,
sometimes I am sad when I think of you because I am frustrated with Me.

About this poem

Written as I reflected about life, relationships (friends/family) and in particular of one cousin who is younger than me but just a great guy. The line “sometimes I am sad when I think of you” came to me and the rest just followed. May edit it a bit more. We will see.
