NIGHT CALLERS HUNTING

Phil Roberts 1957 (Melbourne)

Night callers are hunting
Through a loathsome swamp,
Where only losers go.

Shrilling like eagles
Night Callers stalking the old,
Hoping soon to feast.

Gliding overhead
Or racing through foul waters,
Hunting living food.

Night Callers shrieking
To terrify their quarry,
Before killing them.

Running down victims
Just like mutant roadrunners,
Callers rarely fail.

Racing to the kill
They're pecking at the living,
Even before death.

Teeth like razor blades
In a jagged beaked mouth,
Night callers are feeding.
