We Are in This Together

The eyes of the homeless
Are weathered with pain
The light is absorbed
By the dusty terrain

Their cargo transported
By backpack or cart
Photos of loved ones
Kept close to their heart

They have no income
They live day by day
Looking for shelter
Behind buildings they lay

They are desperate and scared
They've done nothing wrong
So many lost souls
No place to belong

It takes a lot of courage
To seek help from strangers
Each day praying
For that one life changer

To the poor, their wish
Is to sleep in a bed
When hunger strikes
They need to be fed

Most people are apt
To shun the poor
They push them away
By slamming their doors

They don't understand
What compassion means
They forget they are human
With unfulfilled dreams

There is a fine line between
The rich and the poor
That one day comes
They are out the door

Let us not forget
Where we all came from
Our fate is determined
When the living is done
