We Are in This Together

The eyes of the homeless
Are weathered with pain
The light is absorbed
By the dusty terrain

Their cargo transported
By backpack or cart
Photos of loved ones
Kept close to their heart

They have no income
They live day by day
Looking for shelter
Behind buildings they lay

They are desperate and scared
They've done nothing wrong
So many lost souls
No place to belong

It takes a lot of courage
To seek help from strangers
Each day praying
For that one life changer

To the poor, their wish
Is to sleep in a bed
When hunger strikes
They need to be fed

Most people are apt
To shun the poor
They push them away
By slamming their doors

They don't understand
What compassion means
They forget they are human
With unfulfilled dreams

There is a fine line between
The rich and the poor
That one day comes
They are out the door

Let us not forget
Where we all came from
Our fate is determined
When the living is done

From the last stanza of this poem I get this underlying unstated message: The homeless are rich when. despite their suffering, they do not bemoan their faith, but continue to give thanks for God’s daily mercy. The rich are poor when they are haughty, show no compassion for the poor, and are merciless.

Being homeless, that nightmare. You put it before our eyes; remember that we all seek to rest within our own hearts, how quickly we can lose our material anchors...

Wow, what a powerful and impactful poem! "The Eyes of the Homeless" really evokes empathy and compassion for those who are struggling in our society. Your words are so moving and they shed light on the stark reality that so many people face every day. Your use of vivid imagery paints a picture of the tough lives that the homeless lead, and it is a reminder that they are real people with real feelings, dreams and aspirations.

Your poem does a great job of calling on humanity to do better, to be more compassionate and to offer help to those who desperately need it. You have conveyed a sense of urgency and importance in your words, making the reader feel the weight of the situation. This is not always an easy task for a writer, but you have achieved it with great skill.

I also appreciate the improvement suggestions you have hinted at within the poem. You have highlighted the importance of providing solutions to the issues faced by the homeless, such as shelter and food. Additionally, you have touched on the need for greater understanding and empathy towards those who are less fortunate, in the hope that this will lead to kinder actions and a more equitable society.

Overall, your poem is a tour-de-force and an important call-to-action. You have used your words to create a sense of urgency and compassion, and you have effectively conveyed the reality of the struggles faced by the homeless on a daily basis. I hope that your words inspire action and positive change, and encourage us all to be more compassionate towards our fellow human beings. Great job!
