Analysis of Behind The Smile
You look at me,
and what do you see?
A smile on my lips,
do you not also look
to my eyes?
They water now.
Though you don’t
know who I am,
though we will
never meet again,
do you wonder
why I hide behind a smile?
Wait until you leave,
until my job is done,
then the tears fall freely,
banishing the last of
the mask, the disguise
I was forced to set up.
In the sea of your own life,
do you not stop to ask
what is going on in
someone else’s head,
why they are angry,
why they are down.
Instead you go your own
way, passing by an
opportunity,
leaving a friendship
at the beginning,
at the doorstep.
Now you will never
know just exactly what
this smile hides,
you will never
share in the pain
that drips into my heart.
