Analysis of The Basics

Dean 1974 (USA)

I have had the basics all my life Food, clothing, shelter
I am not of color so I do not know what that is like
I have been treated like a second class person
I have fought hard for everything I have
I have never truly been loved growing up
I do not know what love is, all
I know is doing what keeps people safe
I was told I would never amount to anything
I was told I would be dead at 22
I am hardened
I am jaded
I hate life as I see it
I won't end myself of my own hand
I have a son
I want to protec thim
I do not know what love is
I want to protect my son
I do not know how emotionally how to do that
I have no emotions when it comes to others
I never received the basics of love, So
I do not know how to love.
