Analysis of To Maria

Hey Maria,
They just told me the most terrible thing
Is it true?
But surely not.
For how could the world exist without you in it?

Save me, Maria,
There’s a hurricane out there
Named after you
Leaving destruction and debris in its wake
I think I’m lost

Hey Maria,
How could the world be so cruel?
To take you from me
So I wallow in my sadness
In the very darkness that I hate
Hoping it’ll bring me closer to you

Hey Maria,
I cried for a while today
And you weren’t there to dry my tears
But how could you?
When the reason I cried
Was because you weren’t there to calm my fears

Hold me, Maria,
I’m feeling cold tonight
I think the thunder might
Shatter the windows with its deafening noise
And mom and dad are still arguing
And the windows are still shaking
Take me with you

Hey Maria,
It doesn’t sit right with me how
The hands that I held are now six feet under
And the bone that you broke when you were seven
From that fateful cycling accident,
Is now decaying amid worm infested soil
Can you hear me?

Dear Maria,
Your ghost haunts me still
Perched on that broken window sill
So, I lay my head on it and wait in vain.
And when the wind caresses my face
For a blissful moment I think it’s you
Who’s tugging me into a warm embrace
Help, I’m going insane

Hey Maria,
Songbirds sung to me today
While the sun cascaded down in rays
And then the moon glittered on the sea.
If you were here, you would write poems about it
Or grace your canvas with gentle brushstrokes
And dream of art that could be made around it
While I sit here and ponder of what could be

Hey Maria,
I used to think it was such a shame
That the world would not see your smile again
But it might be a good thing
For your smile was the purest I’d ever seen
And I’m sorry for not realizing before
That seeing was a luxury I wouldn’t have anymore
That I would never again gaze upon those eyes so blue
Oh, this cruel world was never worthy of you!

Promise me, Maria,
That you’re better now
I have this vision
Of you laughing in the gardens of Eden
So let me avow,
I love you, I do
And I wish I had told it to you
Before you took the jump
That took you from me

Hey Maria,
It’s been a few years since you departed
Since you had left me broken-hearted
I think I’m doing alright now.
But then I close my eyes
And you stare back at me
It’s like I cannot breathe
Inhaling seems too difficult a task
And exhaling too mundane
I know I need help but I’m too proud to ask

Help me, Maria,
I thought I saw you today
But actually I’m just in over my head
I wanted you to hug me
And make me feel okay
This time, I’d give you my attention undivided.
And watch as your lips quirk to the side
As your eyes light up your face
Then stop whatever I was doing before
Just to listen to your heart race

Hey Maria,
I had a baby girl today
She has your smile
And your eyes as well
Her laughs a song that seem to cast a spell
She is just as beautiful as you.
I tell her of her aunt who passed away
With whom she’s so alike
I want her to carry a part of your soul
To grow with your colors and be twice as bold
I think I’ll name her Maria too

Hey Maria,
We might meet again soon
The doctor says so
And my fragile heart knows it too
Feebly, it races at the thought of seeing you once more -
Would we catch up over some tea,
Or run along in sunlit meadows as we once did before?
Skipping stones, just you and me.
Would you plait my hair and hug me tight?
As we let our hearts soar into a magnificent flight
And whisper sweet nothings to my ear?

Please, Maria,
Will you hold my hand?
For the darkness has come to claim me
As it had once claimed you
But I’m not as angry as I used to be

Hey Maria?
Can you hear me?
