Analysis of Mannequin

Damilare Ojo 1995 (Lagos)

I'm Human
Or that's what I think I am
Chiseled to thrill onlookers
But there's no such thing as vigor in me
Call me "an object of many apparels"
I could seem funky today and on the morrow casual
That's what they do with me

I'm Human
They make me assume I am
Folks gaze with curiosity
My structure, too whole to be genuine
Decent on the outside, desolate on the inside
Tossed on the left, yanked from the right
I presume that's what I was concocted for

I'm Human
I really do reckon I am
Perhaps if I could speak
My captors will let me live
Call me "a prisoner in my flesh"
Who awaits suggestions from bystanders
That's what I'd ever do

I'm Human
I candidly want to be treated like one
Stroll amidst groups, bat my eyes and fall asleep
I want to possess my existence and rule my world
I need acquaintances and foes to make me grow
If I'm awarded the license to converse
I'd yell: I WANT TO BE FREE!
