Analysis of A Bed of Diamonds

Sometimes I think that the stars are touchable things
So I reach into the dark sky
But my hand always whisks through cold night air
I’ve realized
That the stars are really polished diamonds
And I can pluck one from the midnight above me
I can hold a piece of the universe
In the palm of my hand
I study that brilliant shining thing
It glistens on the side that faces the sun
But it’s dull on the side that sees only the rest of the galaxy
That must be why they put the prettiest side of the diamond on show
In a wedding ring
I’ve discovered
That the stars are really diamonds
And that wedding rings are self-centered
And that the universe is a reachable thing
That’s why every night
I stand up in my bed
And use my arms to gather up as many stars as possible
I lie in a bed of diamonds
They sing me lullabies under my sheets
And they show me their shiny side that they only show to the sun
I’ve decided
That I’ll start a collection next to my pillows and stuffed animals
The universe is cold and lonely
The stars tell me
So they can stay with me
And I promise to pull them all down to earth
