L’idiot vagabond qui charme les vipères
Clopine tout le jour infatigablement,
Au long du ravin noir et du marais dormant,
Là-bas où les aspics vont par troupes impaires.

Quand l’automne a teinté les verdures prospères,
L’œil fixe, avec un triste et doux balancement,
L’idiot vagabond qui charme les vipères
Clopine tout le jour infatigablement.

Les serpents endormis, au bord de leurs repaires,
Se réveillent en chœur à son chantonnement,
Et venant y mêler leur grêle sifflement
Suivent dans les chemins, comme de vieux compères,
L’idiot vagabond qui charme les vipères.
