Analysis of La vieille échelle

Maurice Rollinat 1846 (Châteauroux) – 1903 (Ivry-sur-Seine)

Gisant à plat dans la pierraille,
Veuve à jamais du pied humain,
L'échelle, aux tons de parchemin,
Pourrit au bas de la muraille.

Jadis, beaux gars et belles filles,
Poulettes, coqs, chats tigrés
Montaient, obliques, ses degrés,
La ronce à présent s'y tortille.

Mais, une margot sur le puits
Se perche... une autre encore ! et puis,
Toutes deux quittant la margelle

Pour danser sur ses échelons,
Leurs petits sauts, tout de son long,
Ressuscitent la pauvre échelle.
