Analysis of La Débâcle

Maurice Rollinat 1846 (Châteauroux) – 1903 (Ivry-sur-Seine)

L’orfraie a rendu son oracle.
Venu vite, le soir se bâcle ;
L’écluse émet d’horribles sons,
Puis, avec d’immenses frissons,
Partout craque... C’est la débâcle !

Et l’on voit l’effrayant miracle
D’un vitreux peuple de glaçons
Debout, haut comme des maisons,
Dépassant les rochers qu’il racle.

Magnifique et hideux spectacle !
L’énorme glacier vagabond
Roule les murs d’un habitacle,
Emporte les pierres d’un pont.
Le vent qui s’acharne répond
Aux banquises couchant l’obstacle.

D’aspects et de bruits plus funèbres ?
Jamais personne n’en rêva !
Fantomal, blanc, cela s’en va...
En clapotant, l’onde, à pleins bords,
Semble ramper dans les ténèbres
Sous des multitudes de morts.
